I got what I paid for @ $99 + taxMay 24, 2010 The first HP Officejet I bought back in 1996 cost me almost $700. It was 3x bigger than this one, black & white only, and crapped out after about 3 yrs.
This version, the 4315, also crapped out after about 3 yrs. But it only cost me about $107 with tax. So, in the grand scheme of things, that's not too bad. $35/yr for a printer / fax / copier. The stupid ink cartridges cost me more than that--which, of course, is HP's business model: sell the hardware cheap, make your money on the ink, make 'em junk so they have to buy another one after the warranty is up. Probably not what Bill & Dave had in mind when they founded the company back in the 40s... but that's pretty much every computer / hardware company's model these days. (I have the HP business calculator I used back in college in 1991 in my desk... it still works perfectly.)
The 6500 seems to be the new version of this machine. Cheap ($99) and VERY mixed reviews. So, as long as your time horizon is not too long and your expectations are not too high, you shouldn't be disappointed with these machines.
Avoid this peice of garbageJan 18, 2010 I have had this all in one for a couple of years and it rarely works as it should. The last straw is that it will no longer recognize the scan function as of this day. All attempts to correct the software through HP channels result in the message "there is no known solution to the issue" Look elsewhere and avoid HP at all costs.
the interface and software is terrible!Dec 30, 2009 I've had piles of printers and many many computers and the software bundle that comes with this computer has to be the worst piece of crap ever. It takes at least an hour to load, comes with many programs that simply over complicate the printer and weigh down the speed of your computer, it constantly checks for updates I didn't ask for on programs I never use, and if you go with the custom install that doesn't use all of the programs bundled with it it doesn't work correctly.
I have a pc which has been really complicated. My wife's mac is easy to plug and print without the drivers. However, if you need to scan documents it doesn't work.
There are so many ways to tip this stupid printer over and leave yourself restarting everything that you'd be better off writing the document yourself with a pencil.
Maybe I don't know how to use the software well enough, but as a frequent computer user who prints on multiple machines throughout the week because of my profession, this printer is crap. If you need something that is quick and painless, I would avoid this printer at all costs.
Fantastic for the price!Nov 08, 2009 We originally bought this guy as a backup for our Canon scanner, printer, makes lemonade, etc., printer. However, the Canon soon died and well, this one easily adapted to our main computer usage. The guy at Best Buy told us to stick with HP since printers are their specialty and recommended this one. Only thing bad about it is that it really doesn't like it when you use a refilled cartridge over a new one. It will jam on you and tell you it has an obstruction if the cartridge is even slightly off. Caused a lot of stress until HP told us the problem. It's worked great ever since - faxes are particularly easy to send and receive and it feeds multiple sheets at once. If I could change anything it would be the scanner. I'd like one that is flat, like a copier, so I can scan larger items to sell on ebay, i.e. book covers, etc. Other than that, this thing has been going strong for over 2.5 years and is just one of those things you get once in awhile that you're glad you had the help from the salesclerk. Great product - look for the newer version too which is now black. Highly recommend!
Works well for a whileOct 06, 2009 I have had this printer for about 2 years and then suddenly I started getting error messages like the paper was jammed when there was no jam. Lately it has been non-functional since I keep getting the message that the carriage can't move and that I should clear the obstruction. Of course there is no obstruction.
The ink gauge is inaccurate but I have gotten use to it. I can get weeks or months of printing done after the low ink message comes on. The fax is temperamental at best.
I guess I should be happy that it lasted 2 years. I am looking for a replacement .
